My first 2 HP rockets were PML kits so I didn't need to use recovery wadding as they have the piston system. The kit I'm working on now is a LOC/Precision and wadding will be necessary.
Is there a rule of thumb regarding how much wadding to use? I've read that 1 body diameter will do it, but is that really enough??

I'll admit, I kinda eyeball it -- I add enough until I'm comfortable that the parachute is protected. It's cheap, it's biodegradable, it's hard to use too much unless you get excessive.

Get a Nomex or Kevlar Blanket/Chute protector and never worry about wadding again.
See Giant Leap Recovery page,Quickburst recovery prodects and Wildman Rocketry.
Or You can get really anal about the whole thing and use Dog Barf (cellulose insulation) and a Chute protector. _________________ Bill Richardson ENC USNR Ret. TRA 8703 L2 In my opinion stupidity should be painful, very painful. Because if it was there would be alot less of it in the world today.
