To All,

I am very pleased to announce two new motors from Gorilla Rocket Motors, Inc., Jim Harris, Presiding. Mr. Harris is introducing a Green Tornado propellant to his 54MM line of motor cases, specifically for his 54-1400 and 54-1750 Ns hardware.

The K555GT is a 54-1400 Bates grain offering. The Specs are: 1396.95 NS Total, 2.51 seconds burn-time with a 556.0008 Average. This 1520 Gram total (780 gram propellant) motor, burns with a mostly square wave curve. All green propellants have a traditionally hard to light characteristic, and it is displayed prominently in the curve VIA the indication of the Bates ends lighting, progressively last. The Curve has an immediate rise, upon ignition to 120 pounds of thrust at the .2 second point, with a progressive rise to max thrust at the 140 pound point, .7 seconds in. The motor maintains that 140 pounds until 2.25 seconds in, where it drops to zero at the 2.51 second point.

The K763GT is a 54-1750 Bates grain offering. The Specs are: 1740.27 NS Total, 2.27 seconds burn-time with a 763.56 Average. This 1810 Gram total (954 gram propellant) motor, also burns with a mostly square wave curve. The Curve has an immediate rise, upon ignition to 150 pounds of thrust at the .15 second point, with a rounded progressive rise to max thrust at the 195 pound point, .6 seconds in. The motor slowly decays from that point during full burn to 175 lbs., at the 2 second point, where it drops to zero at the 2.27 second point.

Congrats to Jim Harris and his continued success.

Subject: New Motors certified

To All,

I am very pleased to announce the first new motor certifications for 2008 for Contrail. These offerings add to their extensive line of Monotube U/C Hybrids. This is also the announcement for the first Trojan Motor System to be certified.

In the Monotube line these are all additional motors to established motor sizes, tube lengths with two exceptions. There is the introduction of a new propellant formula and a new case size in the 54 MM Monotubes.

1. G170PVC This 38 MM 16" Medium PVC motor is a 82.92 Total NS, 3% G , .5 second burn motor, and is a good motor for those applications requiring a high average output in the low G range.

2. I247WS This the first of three motors in the new White Smoke propellant line. This is a 54 MM, 28" Slow, 98% I Motor, 637 NS total, with a 2.65 second burn time.

3. J277WS This is a 54 MM Slow White Smoke motor, the 36" version of the above motor. It is certified as a 62% J, 1031.6 NS Total, 3.8 second total burn time.

4. K525WS This is 48" version of the above WS motors albeit with a Fast injector. This motor was a very stable 26% K, 1620 Total NS, 3 second burn time.

5. K654BS This is a 75 MM 28" Slow 66% K motor, 2132 Total NS, burning for 3.5 seconds

6. K500SP Last motor certified in this test session in the original U/C line is a 54 MM 60" Fast Sparky motor. This motor has a 2237 NS total with a 4.3 second burn time. Take note of the 60" case. There are other motors to be delivered in this length but were not certified at this session.

Finally, I can announce the first motor in the Trojan line of motors. These motors are a case contained grain system but uses DOT certified Nitrous Aluminum Nitrous flight tanks attached to a injector fitting forward closure, reminiscent of the Aerotech Hybrid systems profile. These motors are all fill and fire systems and utilize the same Pyrodex preheater and will be eventually available in all Contrail grain formulations.

1 H200BS The first motor is a 54 MM 3/16" injector motor utilizing a 300 CC tank. The H200BS is a 68% H, 268.96 NS Total, 1.37 seconds burn time motor.

There is scheduled testing of the 54 MM Trojan motor line throughout the summer in all tank sizes, injector and propellant types with the next possible session due at the end of June.

This particular motor size was the first motor selected to test not for only the motor system but to continue qualification of the repaired/refurbished Vertical test stand as well as the new load cell systems and initial full up testing of the new Hybrid fill and fire equipment acquired late last year. The vertical stand has been qualified now for all motors from the, soon to be announced, 29 MM Kosdon By Aerotech reloads, all the way up to 54 MM case size and has been utilized to certify up to 900 NS average motors with the Aerotech K805G motor being the strongest to date.

To All,

I am very pleased to announce new motors for RCS Aerotech, Gary Rosenfield, 'guy in charge', two in the in the Aerotech RMS line and two new motors for the Kosdon By Aerotech TRM line of reloads.

For Aerotech, we have a new motor for the 98/10240 case, the M1800FJ-P. This motor is the largest, to date, of the Fast Black motors and is really impressive on the stand with 4.5 seconds of very thick black smoke (I have the video!) for an 8200 NS total impulse, 60% M, M1833 Average. Initial weight is 20.2 pounds. The curve is a standard square wave curve, rising to 500 pounds immediately, tapering at the 2.5 second point down to 300 pounds at the 4 second point, then a straight drop to zero at the 4.5 second point.

Second new motor is actually a new case size for the 54 MM RMS line, the 54/2800. The K1050W is an update to the original Single Use K1050W motor in a Reload package. This motor is an 89% K motor, 2426 Total NS Impulse, 2.15 second burn time and a tested K1132 Average. The curve is a standard Bates curve, with an immediate Max to 300 pounds decaying to 250 at 1.8 seconds, where it has a straight drop to 0 at the 2.15 point.

Next is two new releases in the KBA line for the Kosdon 29-250 and 29-150 cases.

First up is the H130W motor. This White Lighting offering is a 54% H motor, 247 Total NS, 1.9 second burn time, H127 tested average. This Bates motor's curve is a square wave. running at 40 pounds off the pad out to 1.25 seconds, with a slight concave curve drop to zero at the 1.9 second point

Second is the G82W. This 78% G, 140.97 NS Total has a peak of 23 pounds, with a 1.8 second Burn time. The curve is a slightly progressive square wave, lighting to 17 pounds, rising to 23 pounds at the 1 second point decaying to 20 pounds at the 1.5 second point, with a drop to 0 at the end of burn time.

On the horizon we have a new Fast Black motor for a 75 MM case as well as a few other motors scheduled prior to LDRS.

To All,

At the October test session the following motors were certified:

Aerotech

The motors certified are directly related to the Aerotech M2030G problem resolution, essentially a two prong approach which has resulted in the L2200G and it's close cousin the M1500G.

The M2030G motor was retested on 25 Oct 08 in a vastly modified form, beyond the initial changes made during the Aug-Sep time frame. Due to the nature of these modifications but with the original green propellant, the M2030G has been recertified as the L2200G, a 99.4% L motor, 16 NS below the 5120 M line. The L2200G burns for 2.32 seconds, has a 2518 gram propellant weight (4783 g Total), and an 2204 N average. The results of this test also verify the original modifications did not take the previous interim motor below the M motor class line so all L3 certifications with this motor are confirmed and valid. Aerotech will be announcing the game plan for reconciling all in-hand/on-hand M2030G reloads in the next few days. The M2030G will be manufacturer decertified and enter an immediate consumer burn period.

The second part of the fix effort is a new, higher density green propellant formulation to be used in the same case (75-5120), The M1500G is a 5220 NS (1% M) motor, with a 3.46 second, 1507 N average. The propellant weight is 2631 grams, and a 4896 g motor weight.

Gorilla Motors

Jim Harris has also certified one additional motor in his 38 MM 390 Case. The H225BL Black Lightning (Sparky) is a 266 Total NS (66%) H motor. This motor has a 289N Max, 1.17 second burn time with a 226 N average. The motor contains 162 grams of Propellant with a 468 grams total weight.

To all,

I am pleased to announce a new motor certification for Aerotech Rocketry, Gary Rosenfield presiding. This motor predicates the return of Aerotech to the field of Single Use High Power Motors line which they were well known for, pre fire. Another characteristic of this motor is the use of a clear fiberglass case, shades of the Enerjet motors of the late 70's, which during our testing in August, gave us the unique opportunity to video the internal workings of a Bates Grain motor during the test burns!

The I350R motor is a 38 X 355 MM Single Use motor, of a similar size to the J350W RMS motor. This motor is a 98% I, 473 N max, and a 1.86 second burn time. Total motor weight is a svelte 616 grams and 348 grams propellant, ideal for those I altitude attempts.

Congrats to Aerotech and their return to SU HPR.

I am very pleased to announce multiple new motors certified for the start of 2009. As these offerings are from four different manufacturers we'll take them in order of run certification.

First up is Animal Motor Works, Paul Robinson. The N2876SK-PS is a monster motor. the largest motor we've (TRA) certified since the AT 98/18000 N4800T. This motor is an extremely loud motor with the very persistent spark effects of a typical Skidmark. This 98 MM, 48 inch long motor comes in as a 17% N Motor, specifics as follows:

Total NS 11,939.73 NS
Max N 4,199 N
BurnTime 5.2 seconds

Next set of motors come from AMW/Cesaroni, Paul Robinson and Dr. Jeroen Louwers. We welcomed the opportunity to test some of the Pro38 motors with the new family of AMW/ProX reloads, specifically the Skidmark versions.

First up is the recertification of the single grain G motor. This motor required recertification to bring it up to NFPA requirements for a special effects motor. The G69SK-14A is now certified as an HPR motor. All earlier G69SK motors sold are 'grandfathered' into this certification and shall be flown under the HPR rules recognized by NAR, TRA and CAR.
The rest of the motors in this subset include all of the other current Pro38 case sizes, 3 grain through the 6 grain (the 2 grain was certified last year by CAR). All of the motors are listed in order below.

I am very pleased to announce the first certifications of a large inventory of new motors for the 2009 flying season tested in our March session. The vast majority of these are Spark effect motor, testing of which will be venue limited (cotton this year!) until Sept harvest.

Above all I also wish to thank the following members of Austin Area Rocket Group, our test home field for their assistance in cleaning and reloading most of the above motors, although I do question their sanity as they said they wanted to do it again Smile Helping stomp fire with us were Jeff Short, Jason Koliba, Jim Jarvis and Tad Danley.

These motors came from three manufacturers and will be listed alphabetically by manufacturer name.

Cesaroni is continuing to flesh out their new propellant families in the AMW/ProX line, which included a new motor size, the Pro38-6GXL, proportionally similar to their Pro54-6GXL. The sole non-spark producing motor is a Red Rhino L formulated and assembled as a CTI reload for the AMW 54-2550 snap ring case.

Their motors are as follows:

The L1276RR-PS is an excellent Red motor in the 54-2550 case, a square wave motor, thrusting at a flat 300-325 lbs thrust for 1.65 sec, and a smooth drop to 0 at the 2.2 second point.

There are more CTI motors in queue, scheduled to be tested at the end of April.

Next up is Gorilla Motors. Jim Harris has finally released a set of Bates Grain White motors in his 54 MM cases, to join the original Moonbuners in that propellant type/size, with the 1050, 1400 and 1750 lengths certified.
All of these motors exhibit a slight "Alp" like peak to its thrust curve, with a straight line from the ignition peak to the max thrust point, all about a second in, a straight line to pretty much the ignition peak heights, and then the drop to zero at burnout. The point numbers for these curves will be listed in that order.

Last but not least we have a new set of motors from Loki Research. First off we have the third propellant formula certified for his 75 MM line the Spitfire Spark producing propellant, first up is the 75-3500 motor. The curve is a progressive parabolic style shape, starting at 120 pounds, curving up to 220 pounds at about 2.2 seconds, curves back down to 180 pounds at 3.6, and the drop to burnout. This motor certified as follows:

Next up was three Spitfire reloads for his certified 54 MM line, the 2800, 2000 and 1200 case sizes

The K830SF-PS is a straight progressive motor with a start at 150 pounds then a straight line to 260 pounds, then a straight drop to zero at 2.73 seconds.

The K690SF-PS is profiled very similar to the other spark producing motors in this announcement, starting at 145 pounds, a parabolic curve to 180 pounds at 1.1 sec, back down to 150 at 2.2 seconds dropping near to zero at
2.3 and a curve tail to zero at end of burn time.

Rounding out the line is the J350SF-PS. This motor has virtually the same profile as the K690 but with points at 70, 105, 90 pounds

54-1200
J350SF-PS
931 NS Total
448 N Max
350 N Average

Loki Research has also certified a new case size in the 38 MM line the 38-1200 which looks to have great possibilities. First up is the J650SF Spitfire propellant. The motor ignites to 170 pounds, slowly rises to 195 pounds at the 1 second point, with a straight line drop to the burnout point at 1.45 seconds. This is a nice motor, high thrust but a nice gradual tail-off to help minimize those drag separations possible with fast ON-OFF
38 mm motors.

J750SP-16A
942 NS Total
974 N Max
648 N Average
1.45 sec
45% J

We have our next test session scheduled for April 25th, with a full day of motors to include some of the new case sizes above with other propellants, stay tuned.

Finally, I wish great success to all of these manufacturers and their products.

To All,

I have an additional motor certification to announce from the March test session, Dr. Jeff Taylor's Loki Research 75-6000 case with his Spitfire, Spark producing propellant. As any commercial spark producing propellant normally exhibits a 70 to 80% impulse capability next to the Reds and Blues, Jeff has produced a more efficient special effects propellant for this motor case, with the average results just exceeding the M class line by 2 Newtons. Due to this close result, and as per long time TMT testing/certification policy, this motor will indeed be certified as an M motor but for one year from date of original run (March 21, 2009). The motor will be retested prior to that date to insure it is stable at or above the M class line. The primary purpose behind this policy is to insure lot to lot & environmental stability is verified to continue to be classed as an M class motor.

The M1200SF-PS motor is certified as follows:

75-6000 Loki Research
5122.6 Total NS
1550 N Max
1241.6 N Average
4.485 sec burntime
2968 grams Prop Wt

I am very pleased to announce a new set of certified motors, manufactured by Cesaroni Technology, Inc. These motors were run during our second marathon session of 2009 on the 25th of April, with 68 total firings (CTI and others). Again we had additional help from the same AARG team (Prefecture #54) as our March testing and we greatly appreciate that assistance, doubling our test thorughput.

First off is the complete line of Pro38 motors with the new Blue Streak propellant formula. This also includes the recently released Pro38-6XGL case first utilized in the March session with the Skidmark propellant. The performance data for these motors are listed as follows:

The new CAR MTC, Thomas Raithby has certified a bunch of CTI motors in what is becoming an annual event, right around April (Canadian spring thaw, I suspect Smile), and I have posted the announcement as well as the link for this information. On this list is the final ones in the Blue Streak Pro54 line, the 6G and 6GXL, rounding out the complete line. One of the important points in this process is we now have in place a mail forum for discussion between the three motor test committees, and I will echo all official announcement here, for our members benefit.

To All,

I am pleased to announce two new motors from Loki Research, Dr. Jeff Taylor presiding. These motors are in the Loki Red propellant formula for Jeff's 75 MM line, specifically his certified 6000 and 3500 NS cases. In these cases and with this formulation, the motors, even in a Bates geometry, are closer to long burn offering, coming in at 6.2 and 6.4 seconds respectively.

The M900 is a 4% M, 5332.37 Total NS, 1190 Max N, 846.58 Average, 6.185 seconds The curve is a flat square, with the aforementioned peak, cruising at about 210-220 lbs. for the full burn time. Propellant weight is 3050 grams.

The L480 is a 25% L, 3203.4 Total NS, 587.03 Max N, 504.31 Average. The curve is a slightly progressive rise, with the initial starting value of the Max peak, drops to around 100 lbs, rises to 130 lbs. at 3.2 seconds and then it regresses to 120-125 at 5.8 seconds and then a straight drop to 0 at end of the burn time. Propellant weight is 1830 grams.

There are four additional Loki Research motors due for run prior to LDRS.

If anyone is curious, these are now 712 reloads available, to date, as listed on the Combined Organizational Motor List. If that is not enough there are at least ten more due for running, by us, from three manufacturers, prior to LDRS.

Regards to All,

To All,

I am very pleased to announce official paperwork has been received from Dr. Frank Kosdon, as required, in the effort to return his previously certified motors/reloads to the member approved list.

The below listed Kosdon Enterprises, Truly Recyclable Motor (TRM) reloads were submitted and have been verified with archival TMT and NAR S&T documentation and are approved for immediate use by Tripoli members in good standing, and for all rocketry organizations granting reciprocal approval. These motors are certified on an interim basis for one year, ending on 30 June 2010, with full recertification to be granted for each reload kit through comprehensive TMT or NAR S&T empirical testing prior to that date.

RE: Frank Kosdon Interim Certification addendum

To All,

To recap the above subject, Tripoli Rocketry Association has reinstated Dr. Frank Kosdon as a TRA certified manufacturer. In reference to that Tripoli Motor Testing has also recently granted a single year interim certification period for all Kosdon Enterprises motors that retained approved status at the time of his decertification in April 2001. This included a few originally NAR certified motors.

I did this due to the fact when Kosdon Enterprises was decertified, his motors, under TRA's eyes, were also decertified and were not allowed any sort of a traditional "burn by" date. This also included all NAR certified motors of which were not sanctioned to fly on any TRA or any other field by any TRA member from 1 Sept 2001 on. NAR took a different path and allowed a three year burn date for their members from Aug-September 2001. My announcement of a one year interim certification, for TRA members, was decided upon to redress our previous inability to use these motors in 2001.

NAR has now responded to my announcement by indicating they will NOT honor the TRA interim certification, for their members, on these motors because in their judgment, they had already exhausted their "burn-by" period policy. We support their decision, and caution our members to be cognizant of possible restrictions flying in cooperation with or on NAR sanctioned locations.

NAR Standards and Testing will announce a specific policy with details and, once it is available, and I will echo it here.
