Hey, check it out everyone, Lee managed to make it to a build session!

Giving a quick plug to Scott Rocketry:

While Joe smokes a cigar:

Lee inspects some grains from a previous casting session:

Alright, so under the supervision of our buddy David, we're ready to get the ball rolling. David brings out the ingredients and starts walking us through the steps:

Looks like we're making a giant omelette:

"Hey, whatcha Makin?" "I'm makin' eggs, wanna try some?" Sure!"
(Scout joke.)

Transferring our well mixed omelette to the bigger bowl for machine mixing:

While Lee supervises:

Lee instructs David on the proper way to measure out the additional ingredients:

I dunno man, Lee doesn't look happy:

Meanwhile, Joe has a flashback:

Bad Joe, no donut! Don't you know that stuff gives you gas?

I dunno who the heck that guy is. He just showed up and started brushing curative on the inside of the casting tubes. Friggin' hippie needs a hair cut:

Looks like Lee is satisfied with the work so far:

Casting tubes are set to go!

David looks like he'd trying to help the stuff give birth. Way to be committed David!

Joe, remembering the days when mom used to make fresh, homemade cookies attempts to lick the beater. Kids, don't try this at home:

Next was to put the mix under vacuum, using our old friend, the Mystery Machine of Doom:

Ephin Charlie man, did you have to?

Looks like playdoh:

Our resident n00b packing the propellant in tight:

And with that, the first half of our motor is set aside to cure for a couple of days!

Here's a quick test burn of what the propellant will look like:

That's all for our motor build day. It was a lot of fun, and is certainly an experience anyone involved in high power rocketry should take part in.

I'll leave you with these parting words. Being a huge Packers fan, I've been asked repeatedly how I feel about Brett playing for the Vikings. Well, the nicest thing I can say about it is this:

Till next time, keep rockin.

That's an awesome facility you guys have to work in, for making propellant!

And tell Lee that's some of the best work we've seen him do!

Indeed it is. That was a fun day. Thanks to the Build crew for letting me take part, and for David-wan-kenobi for showing us the way. Good stuff. I learned a lot.

With a safe return from their trek half way across the United States under their belts, David's parents safe return home allowed me to swing by and pick up the finished motor grains.

Here's a couple quick shots:

First the grains, striking a pose:

The grains are 8" long:

And 5.125" wide:

They weigh just over 8 lbs. a piece. Seriously, you can get a workout with these bad boys.

David and his team also took the time to face the surfaces of the grains:

And gave them a slight concave:

Finally, the grains stacked up next to the liner:

I'd measure how long it is, but we're all smart people so I'll let you do the math. Wink

The motor casing still has some work to be done, which David said he'll be able to finish on his return home for the Christmas break.

Our next build isn't scheduled until late September so until then, keep rockin. And remember, senility is no laughing matter. Unless it's at Brett Favre:

So quite a few things have happened since I was last able to update.

Some time in August, Charlie welcomed his new daughter, code named Lady Bug to the world:

Joe celebrated a birthday. He and Chuck Norris are now infinity:

Check out this sweet b-day gift he got from his wife, Beerwenchimus Prime:

This is the smaller one for the back of the rocket trailer of the apocalypse. There are two larger ones for both sides. Special credit to Tim of Rocketry Online for the design and Mark Hayes from Sticker Shock for making the decal happen.

So without too much more delay, how about a little update?

First on the agenda was to get the centering rings and motor tube installed into the boat tail of doom.

Being the expert fiberglass workers we are, we naturally had some obstacles to over come- Like the fact that our boat tail cone is no longer round:

Not a problem though. We'll just fashion ourselves a jig to go around the outside and hold this bad boy in place:

One of the first things to go with old age is eyesight, yet we still let our resident senior citizen play with power tools:

With a bit of muscle and some elbow grease, we were able to squeeze the proverbial oval peg into the round hole:

Fits like a glove:

Now it's time to make the centering ring. Charlie sketches the design he wants to get tattooed on his back:

Using a router and a Jasper jig, we cut out the center of the hole:

And after a little touch up work we have a nice fitting centering ring:

Quick test fit with the motor tube:

With that portion out of the way, our next item on the agenda was to cut and lay strips of glass over the leading and trailing edges of the aft fins:

We used a bathroom wall writing tool to mark the strips:

And a pizza cutter made short work out of cutting the strips:

Meanwhile Charlie cleaned up the edges to receive glass:
