I'm going to be working on my first rocketry project with electronic deployment. I had a few questions just for some general info.

1) Configuration: I assume the timer sits in the avionics bay -- how are deployment charges wired to the timer? Do you drill holes thru the avionics bay bulkheads? An idea of a basic setup would be helpful.

2) Types of deployment charges: Are there different types of deployment charges? I've heard terms like electric match, deployment cannisters, etc. -- a little confusing for the novice. Sad What's my best option?

Thanks -- you guys are great!

Time or altimeter. I'd suggest an altimeter, especially for starting out.

Yes, you're correct, it goes into the bay. You need a way to wire the charges (which are external to the bay) to the electronics inside. You can put contacts on the outside of the bulkhead, or run the wires in through a hole. Either way works; you just need to make sure you seal the hole. Clay, tape, glue, lots of things work. Just keep the charge gasses away from your electronics -- they're corrosive.

I'd suggest the ejection cannisters from Newton's 3rd Rocketry. They've been tested and proven on a variety of electronics and do not require a LEUP or HAZMAT shipping.

Hey, thanks! That's a big help.

Another question came to mind -- Where/how do I get black powder to fill the deployment charges (cannisters)?

Talk to the local fliers in your area, and see where they get it.

In some areas, BP can be tough to come by.

Hi EngineSniffer,

You can order BP from Graf & Sons in 1 lb increments. It's fairly inexpensive ($12 for 1 lb of 4Fg BP) but the hazmat charge ($20) makes it more expensive.

Maybe you could find someone else in your local club that needs some so that you could do a combined order and split the hazmat fee.
